Safety For Administrators

Understand WHS obligations, principal contractor responsibilities, contract interfaces, and safe administration across key construction decisions and processes.
A practical understanding of how workplace health and safety obligations intersect with construction contract administration. Designed for Contract Administrators, Superintendents, engineers and project professionals, this session covers Commonwealth and Queensland WHS legislation, principal contractor responsibilities and the relevant requirements across Australian jurisdictions. You’ll learn how to manage safety risk when reviewing programs, issuing directions, assessing EOTs and variations, running site meetings, responding to incidents and administering AS 2124 and AS 4000-style contracts – without unintentionally taking control of the Contractor’s work methods.

What You'll Learn

Know which WHS framework applies – distinguish Commonwealth requirements from the enforceable State or Territory regime for the project

Understand duty-holder interfaces – recognise PCBU, officer, worker and principal contractor roles, including concurrent duties

Avoid taking over construction methods – stay active in administration without unintentionally assuming operational control of safety-critical means, methods or sequencing

Test the safety consequences of contract decisions – consider WHS implications when reviewing programs, issuing directions, assessing EOTs and variations, and managing access or traffic staging

Keep strong safety governance records – clearly document safety issues, actions, responsible parties, close-out and incident records

Avoid commercial pressure that encourages unsafe shortcuts – consider how payment, acceleration, recovery and access decisions can influence site behaviour

Identify the ten habits that separate defensible contract administration from exposed administration

Apply a simple check before issuing or responding to any notice

Spot early warning signs that a variation or delay claim is heading for dispute

Know exactly what to document — and when — to protect your position

Avoid the three most common mistakes that undermine a superintendent’s certification

Walk away with a one-page reference you can pin above your desk
